On April 22nd Northcrest's Hoe 'n' Hope Garden Club had their yearly Tour of Homes. The garden club does this to help promote the neighborhood, highlight unusual or original homes, and raise money for the maintenance of the main entry planter (beneath the Northcrest sign).

3400 Regalwoods Drive- 2013.08

3400 Regalwoods Drive - Doug Thornburg
Doug fell in love with Northcrest in 1997, when his friends, Brian and Kevin, bought their home on Heartwood Lane. Last year, Doug bought this 1961 split level from its original owners, the Roglins. Since then, Doug has made a number of changes:

  • Installed a new roof & skylights, replacing over 30 rotted tongue and groove boards
  • Gutted original kitchen, installed IKEA cabinetry and '60s style boomerang Formica countertops (which also appear on the wet bar downstairs)
  • Refinished original hardwood floors upstairs, added new hardwoods in hall and main level, rebuilt staircases with hardwood treads/risers
  • New bamboo floors in lower-level family room
  • New 200-amp electrical panel for hot tub, etc.
  • New paint in mid-century hues, inside and out
  • Original plumbing fixtures, tile, and laminate in the upstairs bathrooms, all lovingly preserved.

Around the house you'll see Doug's collections, including Heywood Wakefield tables, funky lamps, Good Seasons cruets, Pyrex serving dishes, unique mid-century dishes, movie projectors and cameras, Anholt ashtrays, cocktail shakers, barware, glass- ware, etc. And the latest addition to the household: "Marilyn" - a turquoise 1963 Mercury Monterey.

On the horizon-landscaping improvements!

3465 Archwood Drive - 2022.03

3465 Archwood Drive - Hartmut and Stephanie Jordan
Stephanie and Hartmut have returned to their roots in Atlanta after enduring seven years living in a 590-square-foot apartment in the heart of Manhattan, where they were pursuing their careers as graphic designers and artists.

Upon the arrival of their son, Hudson, they knew it was time to leave the island. While doing their internet research, they stumbled across a web site (www.northcrestmodern.com) showcasing exactly the type of homes they were hoping to find in Atlanta. Thanks to extensive renovation and exceptional craftsmanship by their neighbor, Wyman Heeden, the seller of the house, Stephanie and Hartmut were able to fulfill their dream of owning a move-in-ready mid-century modern home.

New hardwoods throughout, a brand new kitchen and bathrooms, new windows and a wonderful flagstone patio and new driveway, there was little left for them to do. Being one of the largest homes in the Northcrest neighborhood, it provides them with ample space for a painting/design studio, office, playroom, guest-room and plenty of space to entertain.

Future plans include tackling the landscaping, building a playset in the backyard for their son, renovating the master bath, designing a mailbox that mimics the character of the house and redesigning the railing on the front deck to reinforce the horizontal lines found in the house and carport.

3427 Northlake Trail - 2008-03

3427 Northlake Trail - Rob and Trish Szurgot
Rob and Trish moved to Atlanta from Pennsylvania this past June. Since relocating to Atlanta they've concentrated most of their efforts on furnishing, rather than renovating, their new home, but they have plenty of plans for the future. Rob is a furniture designer/builder, and you will see several of his original pieces as your tour this home.

The Szurgot home was already restored to much of its original glory by the previous owner of 17 years. The home features its original kitchen and upstairs "Hollywood" bath, natural tongue and groove ceilings and (this is unusual) roof eaves, finished lower level with spare bedroom, and a partial basement. As part of the restoration process, the previous owners added central air conditioning, four inches of insulation to the roof, double-pane windows, and extra insulation in the exterior walls. Attention was also paid to the home's landscaping, with a very much appreciated sprinkler system installed.

Rob and Trish are very appreciative of having found such a gem, and such a good base for their personal touches. They are planning to add hardwood floors to the main level, and to redesign the kitchen. Some more items on Rob's "honey-do" list are designing an addition to the back of their home to include a larger master bedroom, a usable walk in closet, and an enlarged master bath. Once they've tackled that, Rob and Trish say that they will figure out what to do with the turret on the roof and the basketball court in the back yard.

3217 Lynnray Drive -2008.01

3217 Lynnray Drive - Kathleen and Paul Curry
When Kathleen and Paul Curry sold their 900-square-foot, 85-year old intown bungalow last year, they were looking for a new home and neighborhood that were completely different. As they had spent the previous four years working on home improvements, they were also looking for a home that did not require any major renovations.

Kathleen, an architect, and Paul, a retired rockster, fell immediately in love with 3217 Lynnray Drive. The main level set it apart from other homes they were considering, with its open plan, new Brazilian cherry hardwood floors, and gorgeous new kitchen. Other features include Lutron lighting controls, a programmable sprinkler system, rigid insulation at the roof line, and Elfa closet systems. The two front bedrooms were enlarged by enclosing the existing balconies. Dignon the Dog escapes city life by sunbathing on the rear deck, surrounded by nature. Kathleen enjoys the large dance floor, also known as the living room, while Paul appreciates the built-in cabinetry in the lower level (perfect for his home office).

Kathleen and Paul would rather be riding their motor-scooters than renovating, but they do have a few projects in mind for this year, including a new driveway and front walk, new windows, and some interior work. Meanwhile, Kathleen, Paul and Dignon the Dog are enjoying Northcrest East and their new home and look forward to meeting more of their wonderful neighbors!
