3421 Summitridge Drive - Steven and Carla Gamper
When they moved into their Northcrest home in 1994, Steven and Carla Gamper were excited to have found the perfect canvas for their love of design and construction. As owners of a design/ build remodeling firm, they had planned on redoing the kitchen as their first project, but when Hurricane Opal's 70MPH winds uprooted an 80- year-old oak tree that landed on the bedroom end of the house, their plans changed. They lived with a partially demolished kitchen while they worked on repairing damage to the roof, doors, windows, cracked walls, and fireplace.

Since that time, they have also added hardwood floors throughout their entire home, installed new wiring, and updated plumbing and mechanicals. Steven and Carla also opened up the lower level with a new support beam and numerous built-ins for storage and display.

The two projects they feel have added the most to their home in terms of value and personal enjoyment are the newly remodeled kitchen with bumped-out eating area and loads of storage, and insulating the living room's vaulted ceilings. They were torn about covering up the wood, but added character back by coffering the ceilings. The foam board insulation has helped tremendously with heating and cooling.

Ultimately, there isn't much in this house that hasn't been done. Next on their list-landscaping.

3719 Summitridge Drive Terry Ernsberger
Inspired by the architectural styles of Frank Lloyd Wright, Green & Green, and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Terry designed and built many enhancements to create a stunningly beautiful home. The ink wasn't even dry yet on the mortgage papers when Terry began renovations by removing the master bedroom carpeting to reveal beautiful hardwoods.

The entire kitchen was gutted and modernized with Jenn-Air® appliances and Corian® counter tops. In rebuilding the main bathroom, Terry used the extra-deep wet wall (where all the plumbing is housed), to his advantage by recessing the mirror, accent lighting, and much-needed shelving space. The movie theatre in the basement is a must-see!

Starting with an empty shell of a room and a 65- inch TV, Terry created an entertainment showcase. The room features Green & Green influenced hardwood walls, and a twilight blue ceiling reminiscent of the Fox Theatre. Media and electronics are housed in a hidden room behind a secret door.

Additional improvements include new paint throughout, a new entryway wall, restoring the upstairs fireplace, carpeting, hardwood flooring in the living room and hallway, Japanese-style decking, a zen garden, and other landscaping improvements. Through it all, Terry has retained - and enhanced - the home's mid-century modern appeal.

What's next? Terry says furniture would be nice.

3433 Archwood Drive - 2016.05

3433 Archwood Drive - Scott and Heather Markle
Heather Markle is a very patient and understanding woman, who has put up with a lot over the past two years working with her husband, Scott, on an expansive overhaul of their unique "California Modern" home. To her credit, hardly any tears were shed.

Heather and Scott have devoted nearly every free moment to a lengthy list of remodeling projects. Every room was repainted in vibrant colors. Existing hardwood floors were refinished to match the original wood ceilings, and new hardwoods replaced linoleum. Berber carpet, new baseboards and updated fixtures were installed throughout.

All that work, however, was merely practice for the main event. With lots of help from Scott's Dad, Bill, the Markles literally rebuilt their kitchen from scratch. Starting with raw lumber, they hand-crafted new cabinets painted in a "mod" Heather orange. endured months without a kitchen, doing dishes in the bathroom, and fighting a constant battle against drywall dust. Her patience was handsomely rewarded - the new kitchen is stunning.

Somewhere along the way, the couple also found time to get married and put in a pool. Next on the list are landscaping, exterior painting, and eventually updating the bathrooms. For now, Heather is taking a well deserved break from remodeling and Scott is reflecting on how lucky he is to have found such a patient, understanding partner.

3462 Archwood Drive - Wyman and Vivian Heeden
The front of this Northcrest home features extensive landscaping and a new entrance walkway. The pond and waterfall in the garden can be enjoyed from the mini front patio. New front windows, removal of the dividing wall, and an expanded skylight give a bright, open feel to the living area.

Hardwood floors were added throughout the upper levels, and the bathroom was given a much-needed facelift. The original "Jack & Jill" bath had already been enclosed. In the kitchen, removal of walls and the addition of a skylight and garden window also lend to the open feel. The recessed shelves and mini-pantry add some storage. The original back patio was lowered, expanded, and enclosed to add a sunroom. Note the oak moulding throughout, most of which came from a fallen tree on the property!

Continuing outside, be sure to note the transformation of the original "mud and leaves" backyard into extensive, usable patio space, stairs, and a much-needed work shed. A new sliding glass entry. removal of the dividing wall and addition of new lighting all contribute to the bright airiness of the lower level. The bar was removed to create a temporary "office" area. The choice of floor tile is up for review...it's a little hard to clean. Finally, the front patio was enclosed to create another sun room.

Notice the increased roof thickness, which allows for insulation. This, along with new windows and a new furnace, cut heating bills in half this year.
